Science Chapter 2 Study Guide

Test on Wednesday, 10/30

Key Terms:

Research– to look for facts about something

Prototype– the first working product that uses a design.

Engineer– is any person who designs new technologies.

Wheel and axle– a round object attached to a post called an axle. Turning the wheel causes the axle to turn.

Wedge–  a simple machine made from two slanted sides that end in a sharp wedge. As a wedge is pushed through material such as wood or food, it cuts or splits the material.

Screw– an inclined plane wrapped around a center post. Screws can be used to hold things together and to raise or lower things.

Pulley- can make work easier in two ways. It can decrease the amount of force needed to move an object. It can also change the direction that force is applied.

Inclined plane– or a ramp, is a slanted surface. It connects a lower level to a higher level. Less force is needed to move an object over a longer distance.

Lever– is a stiff bar that rests on a support. A lever is used to lift and move things. When you push down on one end, the other end lifts up. (Think of a seesaw.)

Key Ideas:

  • Scientific discoveries can lead to the development of new technology.
  • Technology can help people solve problems.
  • In science, work is done when a force moves an object across a distance. The amount of work you do depends on how much force you can use and how far you move the object.
  • Simple machines make work easier. There are six types of simple machines: A wheel and axle, wedge, screw, pulley, & inclined plane. (Review the book we made in class that explains each simple machine.)
  • Complex machines are made up of simple machines that work together. (For example a can opener and bicycle are each complex machines because they have different simple machines in each.)
  • The design process is a step by step method used to solve a problem.
  • People research and develop possible solutions to problems.
  • Engineers make prototypes from their designs.  A prototype is the first working product that uses a design. Engineers test a prototype to determine if it meets their expectations. They perform multiple tests to get accurate results.
  • The final step of the design process is to evaluate and redesign the prototype. Evaluate means to find out how well something works.
