Vocabulary Words

  1. Slavery- The practice of owning slaves.
  2. Segregation- Separating people of different races, classes, or ethnic groups. 
  3. Civil Rights- The freedoms and privileges that we have because of the Constitution 
  4. Equality- The state of being equal, especially in status, rights and opportunity
  5. Prejudice- Having an opinion about someone before getting to know them

Religion Chapters 4 & 5 Open Book Quiz Review Sheet Answers

  1. Baptism is the first Sacrament that we receive.
  2. In Baptism, we become members of the Church and Children of God.
  3. Water is an important sign of new life and being cleansed of sin.
  4. Grace is God’s life in us.
  5. The first sin is called Original Sin.
  6. What does the priest do during Baptism?
    1. Makes the sign of the cross on our foreheads.
    2. Pours water on our head three times.
    3. Blesses us in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
  7. The Sacrament of Confirmation seals us with the Gift of The Holy Spirit.
  8. At Confirmation the bishop or priest traces a cross with a sacred Chrism on a person’s forehead.
  9. The Church uses fire as a symbol to represent the Holy Spirit.
  10. At Confirmation the anointing with Sacred Chrism shows that we are set apart to do God’s work.

Esperanza Rising & Language Arts test Friday, October 20, 2017

Esperanza​ ​Rising

This part of the assessment will be based on the Prologue, and chapters #1 and #2. Have students study the comprehension questions for these chapters that were assigned for homework. Students will be allowed to use their books as a reference.

Prepositions​: are connecting words that show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence. Students will need to select the correct preposition that makes the sentence correct. Some examples are: u​nder, over, between, about, with, in, by, on, near, before, above, below, through, after – I posted some videos to Google Classroom for students to watch.

Metaphors: are a figure of speech that describes an object or an action in a way that is not literally true. It helps explain an idea or comparison. Example: Mrs. Cooney burned up the dance floor. (Mrs. Cooney danced a lot.)

Similes: are a figure of speech used to make a comparison but uses the word as or like. Example: The firefighter is as brave as a lion. (The firefighter is very brave, just as lions are powerful and strong.)

Essay: Students will have to answer an essay question.
